CHAPTER 1 TITLE: THE WOMAN IN WHITE

The first thing everyone noticed was the bloodless white of Dr. Mara Ellison’s suit.

It looked almost unreal against the marble floor of the Solmere Grand Resort, a place built for billionaires, politicians, and families who arrived in black cars with tinted windows. The lobby smelled of orchids, ocean air, and money. Crystal chandeliers glowed above polished floors so clean they reflected every guest like a painting.

Then Mara came through the glass doors dragging a woman who looked as if she had crawled out of a nightmare.

The stranger was thin, bruised, and shaking. Her gray shirt was torn at one shoulder. Her hair clung damply to her face, and her knees nearly buckled with every step. A dirty canvas bag hung from one trembling hand.

People stopped talking.

A champagne glass froze halfway to a woman’s lips. A businessman lowered his phone. Two children standing near the fountain stared until their nanny pulled them away.

At the front desk, Julian Cross, Solmere’s guest relations director, stepped forward with a smile so practiced it did not reach his eyes.

“Dr. Ellison,” he said quietly, “whatever this is, it needs to happen outside.”

Mara tightened her grip around the stranger’s arm, not cruelly, but firmly enough to keep her standing.

“No,” Mara said. “It happens right here.”

Julian glanced around the lobby. “Our guests are watching.”

“Good,” Mara replied. “Maybe they’ll finally see what this place really protects.”

The stranger tried to speak, but only a broken breath came out. Mara guided her toward the center of the lobby, where the Solmere crest was set into the marble floor in gold and black stone. The moment the injured woman saw that crest, her body folded beneath her.

She dropped to her knees.

A security guard moved in fast. “Ma’am, you can’t be here.”

The woman flinched at his voice, curling one arm around the canvas bag as if it were the only thing left in the world that belonged to her.

Mara turned on the guard. “Take one more step toward her, and I promise you every camera in this lobby will record the biggest mistake of your career.”

The guard stopped.

Julian’s face hardened. “This resort has rules.”

The bruised woman looked up at him, her eyes red and wet.

“So did my father,” she whispered.

Julian’s expression changed for the first time.
