Chapter 2

PART 2: THE LIQUIDATION

The tension in the foyer became so thick it was suffocating. The click of firearms being readied by my father’s security team echoed off the marble walls, but Ricardo Salazar merely raised a single, commanding hand, halting his men instantly.

"Santiago," my father said, his voice terrifyingly calm, a low baritone that carried decades of absolute power. "Look at me very carefully. You are currently holding a knife to the heiress of the largest logistics and financial empire in this hemisphere. Every breath you take right now is an act of mercy on my part."

Santiago’s eyes darted frantically between my father and the armed guards. Sweat poured down his face, soaking the collar of his white shirt. "Salazar? No... that's impossible. She’s an orphan. She has nothing!"

"She has me," my father replied coldly. "And more importantly, she has your entire life in the palm of her hand."

From the background, Beatriz's glass of red wine shattered against the floor. The deep red liquid pooled on the marble, mimicking the blood on my dress. Her face had turned entirely pale, her elegant posture completely collapsing as she recognized the billionaire standing in her home. "Ricardo... please. This is a domestic misunderstanding. We didn't know—"

"Silence, woman," my father cut her off without even looking at her. He turned his gaze back to Santiago. "Santiago, check your phone. It should have vibrated three seconds ago."

As if on cue, the phone in Santiago's pocket buzzed loudly. Holding the blade tight against my neck, his hand trembling, he clumsily pulled out his device with his left hand.

The screen flashed with a barrage of emergency red alerts from his corporate banking apps.

"What did you do?" Santiago stammered, his voice losing all its previous venom, replaced by a hollow, sickening fear. "What is this?"

One of my father’s corporate attorneys stepped forward, opening a leather folder. "Mr. Rivas, as of 11:15 p.m., Grupo Salazar has called in the three-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar line of credit that has been keeping Rivas Enterprises afloat for the last six months. Furthermore, due to the live-streamed evidence of severe domestic assault and corporate extortion captured by Mrs. Salazar's hidden device, the federal prosecutor has just frozen every asset tied to your family name."

"You're broke, Santiago," I whispered against the blade, a cold smile finally breaking across my face. "The house, the cars, the foundation... it's all gone."

Santiago stared at the screen, his mind completely breaking under the weight of the realization. His family’s entire legacy, built on old money and ruthless manipulation, had been wiped out in the span of a single minute. His grip on the knife loosened just a fraction.

That was all the opening my father's lead security guard needed.

With blinding speed, the guard lunged forward, twisting Santiago’s wrist until the blade clattered onto the floor. Santiago groaned in pain as he was violently shoved face-first onto the marble, his hands pinned behind his back as heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place.

My father rushed over, instantly wrapping his heavy wool overcoat around my shoulders and pulling me into a protective embrace. "I'm here, Valeria. I'm so sorry I let you walk away from me. You're safe now."

I buried my face in his chest, my body shaking as the adrenaline began to fade. "The baby... we need to go to the hospital, Dad."

"The medical helicopter is landing on the lawn right now," my father said gently, lifting me into his arms. As he carried me toward the front door, he stopped by Beatriz, who was kneeling on the floor, frantically trying to clean the wine stains off her expensive rug with her bare hands.

My father looked down at her with unyielding disgust. "A good mother protects her family, Beatriz. A monster covers up the bruises. Enjoy the asset forfeiture."
