Chapter 3: The Price of Pride

Chapter 3: The Price of Pride
Three days later, the mansion stood unusually quiet.
Luxury cars disappeared one after another.
Auction notices arrived.
Employees resigned.
The staff who had once feared Andrew now packed their belongings without saying goodbye.
The empire collapsed faster than anyone had imagined.
Andrew walked into Escalante Global Headquarters carrying no arrogance, only desperation.
He was finally shown into Mariana's office.
She stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows, calm and composed.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Andrew slowly dropped to his knees.
"I'm sorry."
"I was blind."
"I believed the lies."
"I thought I had built everything."
His voice cracked.
"I loved you."
Mariana turned to face him.
"No."
"You loved the version of me that never challenged your pride."
"You never truly saw the woman standing beside you."
Tears filled Andrew's eyes.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making it right."
Mariana shook her head gently.
"Some apologies arrive after the damage is irreversible."
She placed a single envelope on the desk.
Inside were the finalized divorce papers.
Along with one handwritten note.
"The greatest fortune I ever gave you wasn't money."
"It was my loyalty."
"You lost both on the same night."
Andrew closed his eyes.
For the first time in his life, he understood that wealth could be rebuilt.
Trust could not.
Weeks later, Brenda quietly disappeared from the public eye.
Margaret sold the mansion to pay mounting debts.
Sullivan Holdings was acquired by another corporation, its once-famous name fading into business history.
Mariana never celebrated their downfall.
Instead, she rebuilt hospitals, funded scholarships, and expanded the charitable foundation she had always dreamed of creating.
She had lost a marriage.
But she had found herself again.
And as she stood on the balcony of her new headquarters, watching the sunrise over the city, she realized something that no amount of money could ever buy:
True power is not the ability to destroy those who hurt you.

It is having the strength to walk away without becoming like them.
The End.
