PART 10: THE ASSAULT CHARGE UPGRADE

The grand courtroom of the Federal Judicial District was brightly lit, smelling of old oak, wet coats, and quiet retribution.

Santiago stood at the defense table, his hands loosely cuffed, his dark hair messy, his posture completely bent under the weight of his new reality. Beside him sat his defense lawyer, who was frantically thumbing through a stack of character references that no one in the room cared about.

The judge slammed her gavel down with a thunderous CRACK that made the gallery instantly go silent.

"Mr. Rivas," the judge announced, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. "The forensic evidence presented by the state prosecutor indicates a consistent, three-year pattern of identity theft, bank fraud, and deliberate asset concealment. But the court must now address the newly upgraded charges brought by the District Attorney."

Beatriz sat in the front row of the gallery, her face pale, her hands shaking violently as she watched her son. She looked over at me, as I sat across the aisle in a tailored navy blue suit, my expression completely motionless and unyielding.

"The physical altercation on the night of November 14 has been re-evaluated," the prosecutor stepped forward, playing a sharp audio enhancement from the security intercom logs. "The defense claims the assault was minor, but the medical records of the plaintiff confirm she was six months pregnant at the time she was forcibly shoved into a rainstorm. Furthermore, the act of public humiliation by Beatriz Rivas constitutes accessory to domestic endangerment."

The defense lawyer pleaded frantically, "Your Honor, my client is a respected member of the business community. We can offer the Rivas family ranch as collateral for a reduced bail bond."

"The Rivas ranch has already been seized under a separate civil judgment filed by the Salazar Trust, counselor," the prosecutor countered, sliding a certified deed copy onto the bench. "Mr. Rivas has zero remaining assets in his name. Every single bank account connected to his entity has a negative balance."
