Part 5: The Hospital Room at the End of Hope

Part 5: The Hospital Room at the End of Hope

Victoria couldn't breathe.

The medical envelope lay on the marble floor only inches from her knees, yet it felt impossibly far away.

Her hands trembled as she reached for it.

The logo printed across the front belonged to one of the state's leading cancer treatment centers.

It wasn't fake.

It wasn't a trick.

It was real.

Inside was a single page.

The diagnosis confirmed that Amelia Hale was suffering from advanced ovarian cancer. The treatment notes described months of chemotherapy, repeated hospital admissions, and one heartbreaking sentence near the bottom of the report.

Further treatment is unlikely to be curative.

Victoria stared at the words until they blurred.

"No..."

She whispered.

"No... this can't be happening."

Emma quietly stood beside her.

"My mommy told me you might cry."

Victoria slowly looked up.

"What else did she say?"

Emma thought for a moment.

"She said not to be angry."

Victoria covered her mouth as tears rolled down her face.

"She said... you were scared too."

Those simple words broke something inside Victoria.

For years she had expected Amelia to hate her.

Instead...

Her sister had protected her.

Even now.

Eleanor placed a gentle hand on Victoria's shoulder.

"Amelia never stopped loving you."

Victoria's voice shook.

"Where is she?"

Eleanor answered softly.

"St. Matthew's Medical Center."

Victoria stood so quickly that the chair behind her tipped over.

"We're leaving."

The hotel manager stepped forward.

"Do you need me to call your driver?"

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

She turned toward Emma.

"Will you come with me?"

Emma nodded without hesitation.

"I want to see Mommy."

Twenty minutes later, the black sedan pulled into the hospital parking lot.

The rain had finally stopped, leaving the pavement shining beneath the evening lights.

Victoria barely waited for the car to stop before opening the door.

She hurried through the entrance with Emma's small hand tightly clasped in hers.

Neither of them spoke.

At the reception desk, Eleanor quietly gave Amelia's name.

The nurse looked up.

"Family?"

Victoria answered before anyone else could.

"I'm her sister."

The nurse studied her for a moment, then nodded.

"Room 614."

Every step down the hallway felt heavier than the last.

Victoria remembered the last time she had seen Amelia.

Seven years earlier.

Their father had been shouting.

Amelia had stood in the doorway carrying one small suitcase.

Victoria had watched from the staircase.

She wanted to run after her.

She wanted to tell her not to leave.

Instead...

She had stayed silent.

That silence had lasted seven years.

Room 614 stood at the end of the corridor.

Victoria's hand hovered over the door.

She was suddenly terrified.

"What if she doesn't want to see me?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"She sent Emma to find you."

Victoria slowly pushed the door open.

The room was quiet except for the steady rhythm of a heart monitor.

Amelia lay asleep beneath a white blanket.

She looked so much thinner than Victoria remembered.

Her once long dark hair was gone.

Her cheeks were pale.

The confident young woman from the photograph had become almost unrecognizable.

Only her eyes remained the same.

As if sensing someone nearby, Amelia slowly opened them.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

She blinked once.

Twice.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Victoria?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Victoria stepped closer, unable to stop crying.

"I'm here."

Amelia smiled weakly.

"I knew..."

She paused to catch her breath.

"I knew you'd come."

Victoria fell to her knees beside the bed.

"I'm sorry."

The words poured out between sobs.

"I'm so sorry."

"I should have found you."

"I should have protected you."

"I should have chosen you."

Amelia gently reached out with her frail hand.

She brushed away one of Victoria's tears.

"You were just a scared little sister."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

"I was a coward."

Amelia smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

"But you're here now."

Emma climbed carefully onto the side of the hospital bed and wrapped her arms around her mother.

"I found Aunt Victoria."

Amelia looked at her daughter, then at her sister.

For the first time in seven years, the three of them were together.

Victoria held both of their hands.

She silently promised herself that she would never let them be separated again.

But as she looked toward the heart monitor beside Amelia's bed, she noticed something that made her stomach tighten.

A doctor had stopped outside the room.

He was holding a fresh set of test results.

His expression told Victoria everything before he spoke a single word.

The news he carried would change all of their lives forever.
