CHAPTER 2 Dragged Across Her Own Lobby

CHAPTER 2

Dragged Across Her Own Lobby

The woman waiting in front of Charlotte looked as though she had stepped out of a luxury fashion campaign.

Her ivory silk pantsuit fit perfectly. Diamond earrings shimmered beneath carefully styled blonde hair. Every movement carried the effortless confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed.

Charlotte recognized her immediately.

Veronica Hale.

She had seen photographs months earlier when private investigators quietly compiled reports on people surrounding Graham Vale. Veronica had appeared in charity galas, exclusive yacht parties, and political fundraisers. Beautiful, ambitious, and notoriously ruthless, she had built a reputation for attaching herself to powerful men before quietly reshaping their empires as though they had always belonged to her.

The engagement to Graham had never been announced publicly.

Vivian had suspected it.

Charlotte had only seen rumors.

Now she was standing less than three feet away.

Veronica, however, saw nothing but an exhausted woman in dirty maintenance clothes.

She looked Charlotte up and down with open disgust.

"I asked you a question."

Charlotte's ribs ached with every breath.

"I need to speak with the front office director."

Veronica laughed softly.

"No."

Charlotte remained calm.

"It isn't optional."

That answer earned another smile.

The dangerous kind.

Behind Veronica, several concierges exchanged nervous glances.

One recognized Charlotte's voice.

He almost stepped forward.

Then he saw Veronica looking back toward him.

He immediately lowered his eyes.

Fear won.

Charlotte noticed.

She noticed everything.

Not one employee had asked whether she was injured.

Not one security guard had approached after seeing a bleeding woman walk into the lobby.

They were waiting.

Waiting to see which side was safer.

Veronica stepped closer until only inches separated them.

"Do you know what this lobby costs to maintain every week?"

Charlotte said nothing.

"It costs more than you'll earn in ten years."

Several wealthy guests chuckled quietly.

Veronica enjoyed having an audience.

"I don't know which supervisor hired you, but they clearly forgot to teach you basic presentation."

She pointed toward the service hallway.

"Go back downstairs."

Charlotte slowly shook her head.

"I came through that hallway because someone tried to kill me."

For the first time, a few guests stopped smiling.

Veronica rolled her eyes.

"Oh, please."

"Not today."

"We're hosting investors."

"You don't get to invent drama in my hotel."

My hotel.

Charlotte almost smiled.

The words told her everything.

Veronica already believed Solmere belonged to her.

She had moved beyond ambition.

She had begun imagining ownership.

Charlotte spoke quietly.

"This hotel has never belonged to you."

Veronica's expression hardened.

"What did you just say?"

"I said..."

Charlotte looked directly into her eyes.

"...you're standing in someone else's future pretending it's yours."

Silence settled over the marble floor.

The pianist stopped playing.

Even the fountain near the grand staircase seemed strangely loud.

Veronica's face flushed.

"You insolent little—"

She grabbed Charlotte's wrist.

Hard.

Charlotte winced.

The bruises from the crash were still fresh.

Veronica mistook the reaction for weakness.

"Security!"

Two guards hurried over.

Neither intervened.

Instead, they waited for Veronica's instructions.

Charlotte stared at them.

She knew both men.

Vivian had attended one guard's wedding.

The other had once received a scholarship for his daughter through the employee foundation.

Neither looked her in the eyes.

Veronica smiled.

"Escort this woman outside."

Charlotte spoke evenly.

"No."

One guard swallowed.

"Ma'am..."

Veronica interrupted.

"If she refuses..."

She yanked Charlotte forward herself.

Charlotte stumbled across the polished marble.

Pain exploded through her ribs.

Gasps echoed around the lobby.

Veronica kept pulling.

"You people work for me."

The sentence slipped out before she realized it.

Several executives standing near the café exchanged quick glances.

Charlotte noticed.

Interesting.

So did they.

Veronica had revealed more than she intended.

Charlotte planted her feet.

"I'm not leaving."

Veronica laughed.

"Oh, you absolutely are."

She pulled harder.

Charlotte lost her balance.

Her knees slammed against the marble floor.

The impact sent burning pain through both legs.

The worn canvas bag slipped from her shoulder.

It struck the floor with a dull metallic sound.

Clang.

Not loud.

But unmistakably heavy.

Charlotte's eyes flashed toward the bag.

Veronica noticed.

"So..."

She smiled.

"That's what you're protecting."

Without hesitation, Veronica kicked the bag several feet away.

It slid across the marble until it struck the base of the concierge desk.

Charlotte's heart stopped.

Inside that bag rested the Gold Master Key.

And Vivian's final letter.

She pushed herself upward.

Veronica shoved her back down.

Guests were no longer whispering.

Some had taken out their phones.

Others simply watched.

No one intervened.

A little girl standing beside her parents tugged gently on her mother's sleeve.

"Mom..."

"Why is that lady hurting her?"

The mother quietly pulled her daughter closer.

"Don't look."

Charlotte heard every word.

Not because the lobby had become louder.

Because it had become completely silent.

Veronica leaned closer.

"You know what your problem is?"

Charlotte met her gaze.

"You forgot your place."

She seized Charlotte's collar.

Then dragged her across the marble.

The rough stone shredded the fabric of the maintenance jacket.

Charlotte's elbows scraped against the polished floor.

Fresh blood appeared.

Every inch burned.

Still...

She refused to scream.

That irritated Veronica more than any insult could have.

"Look at you."

"Pathetic."

"You think staying silent makes you strong?"

Charlotte's breathing became slower.

Steadier.

Across the lobby, the front office director had gone pale.

He knew something wasn't right.

The woman's voice...

Her posture...

The scar above her left eyebrow...

It reminded him of someone.

Someone he hadn't seen since Vivian's funeral.

His eyes widened slightly.

No...

It couldn't be.

Veronica gave Charlotte one final violent pull.

"Apologize."

Charlotte didn't answer.

"I said apologize."

Nothing.

"You have five seconds."

Charlotte slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes swept across the lobby.

Employees.

Managers.

Security.

Bellmen.

Housekeeping staff.

Concierges.

Not one moved.

Not because they hated her.

Because they were afraid.

And fear...

Charlotte suddenly realized...

was exactly how Graham controlled Solmere.

She stopped resisting.

Instead...

She calmly lowered one knee onto the marble.

Then the other.

She became perfectly still.

Veronica frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Charlotte ignored her.

She reached slowly toward the torn canvas bag lying several feet away.

Veronica laughed.

"Looking for your wallet?"

Charlotte's fingers found the zipper.

She opened it carefully.

Inside...

Wrapped in a piece of dark velvet...

lay something heavy.

Something old.

Something her mother had protected for over thirty years.

Charlotte closed her hand around the cold metal.

Then...

Very slowly...

She stood.

The sunlight pouring through the enormous glass entrance struck the object just as she lifted it into the air.

Gold.

Pure gold.

The ancient Solmere crest gleamed brilliantly across the lobby.

Conversation stopped.

Every employee froze.

The bellman nearest the entrance accidentally dropped an expensive suitcase.

It crashed onto the marble with a thunderous echo.

The head concierge stared in disbelief.

"No..."

he whispered.

The front office director's face turned completely white.

Veronica blinked twice.

"What..."

"What is that?"

Charlotte wiped a trace of blood from the corner of her mouth.

Then she looked directly into Veronica's eyes.

For the first time...

Not as a victim.

Not as a stranger.

But as the woman who owned everything around them.

Her voice was calm.

Steady.

Impossible to ignore.

"This..."

She raised the Gold Master Key a little higher.

"...is the original Master Key of Solmere Resort."

A ripple of shock swept across every employee.

Some instinctively straightened their posture.

Others took one unconscious step backward.

Because they all knew the stories.

Vivian had made certain every senior employee understood exactly what that key represented.

Executive authority.

The resort's legacy.

The rightful owner.

Charlotte held Veronica's terrified gaze.

Then she spoke the sentence that would change the balance of power inside Solmere forever.

"This isn't your hotel."

She paused.

Her eyes never left Veronica's face.

May you like

"It's mine."
