Chapter 10 - The Anatomy of a Lie

"I had to protect our family," Diane wailed, her words muffled by her hands.

"Protect us from what?" I demanded, stepping further into the room. "From the truth? From the fact that your biological father was a Black man who loved your mother? You turned your own grandchild into a weapon to defend a racist lie."

Diane snapped her head up, her eyes flashing with defensive anger. "You do not understand! You have no idea what it was like! My mother confessed the truth to me when I was twenty one years old. I had grown up thinking Charles Whitaker was my father. I was raised in a world of country clubs and private schools. When she told me I was the product of a secret affair with a Black man, my entire world shattered. I was terrified people would find out. I was terrified I would lose everything."

"So you buried him," Natalie said coldly. "You buried Isaiah Cole. You threatened Beatrice with legal action when she tried to reach out after Grandma Evelyn died. And when my beautiful daughter was born, looking exactly like the grandfather you erased, you panicked."

"I saw his face," Diane sobbed hysterically. "The moment the doctor held that baby up, I saw Isaiah staring back at me. It felt like all the shame my mother handed to me was suddenly exposed in front of the whole hospital. I panicked. I just wanted to stop people from looking."

"You called me a cheater," Natalie said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You called relatives. You told the church. You dragged Ethan’s name through the mud. You risked my marriage to hide your own cowardice."

I pulled the official medical folder from the shelf and threw it onto the table next to the photograph.

"These are the DNA results," I stated clearly. "They confirm that I am the biological father of both children. They confirm that Maya’s skin tone is the direct result of the African ancestry she inherited from you, Diane. From the father you threw away like garbage."

Diane reached out and touched the folder, her hands shaking violently. The medical seal was unbroken on the copy we had prepared for her.

"I am so sorry," Diane wept. "I was wrong. I was just so scared."

"Your fear is not an excuse for cruelty," Natalie said, standing up. "You are not going to see Maya. You are not going to see Caleb. You are going to leave this house, and you are going to call every single person you infected with your poison. You will tell them the truth about Isaiah Cole. You will confess exactly what you did."

May you like

Diane looked up in absolute horror. "I cannot tell them that. It will ruin my reputation."

"Then you will never see your grandchildren again," Natalie finalized. "Get out of my house."
