The heavy double doors burst open one last time, and two plainclothes federal marshals stepped onto the mahogany floor. The steel handcuffs clicked shut around Gloria’s manicured wrists, the sharp metallic sound cutting through her remaining pretense.
She screamed my name, her expensive silk dress dragging against the carpet as they led her toward the service elevator. Downstairs in the lobby, Daniel was already being escorted into the back of a dark transport vehicle, his golden-boy image completely erased by the flashing blue lights of the compliance unit.
I walked out of the building into the bright afternoon sunshine, the fresh city breeze clearing the remaining scent of her malice.
