Chapter 4 - The Rabbit's SecretThe courtroom held its collective breath as the small girl slowly stopped sobbing, her shoulders shaking against Avery’s blue maternity dress.

Judge Carrington allowed the emotional reunion to occur without interruption, her face an unreadable mask of solemn authority. After a long minute, she tapped her gavel once, very gently.

“Piper,” the judge said, her voice incredibly soft, using the same gentle tone she had employed in her private chambers. “Do you remember what we talked about in my office? Do you remember what you wanted to show me?”

Piper sniffled loudly, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her yellow cardigan. She nodded, her small face still pressed partly against Avery’s shoulder. She slowly detached herself from Avery’s embrace, though she kept one hand firmly anchored to Avery’s fingers.

With her free hand, Piper lifted the worn stuffed rabbit.

To anyone else, it was just an old toy—a gray-and-white plush animal with mismatched button eyes, a missing tail, and a frayed pink ribbon around its neck. Its name was Barnaby. Avery had bought it for Piper at a farmer's market when Piper was three years old, and the girl had never slept without it since.

“Barnaby has a secret,” Piper said, her voice tiny, echoing through the high-ceilinged room.

Brent’s eyes locked onto the stuffed animal, and a terrifying realization seemed to dawn on him. His eyes widened into dinner plates, and he actually choked on his own breath, letting out a wet, strangled cough.

“Piper,” Brent hissed, his voice a desperate, threatening whisper. “Shut your mouth. Don't say another word.”

“Mr. Harlan!” Judge Carrington barked, her voice snapping across the room like a whip. “One more word from you—one single sound—and I will have the bailiff remove you from this room through the holding cell door. Do not tempt me.”

Brent went entirely rigid, his face turning a dark, dangerous shade of purple.

Piper shrank back against Avery’s pregnant belly, terrified by her father’s voice, but she looked up at Judge Carrington, drawing courage from the judge’s steady gaze.

“Daddy put the bad thing inside Barnaby,” Piper explained, her voice trembling but clear. “He thought I was sleeping. But I wasn't sleeping. It was two nights ago. He came into my room with the mean lady.” She pointed a small, shaking finger directly at Sloane Mercer.

Sloane looked as if she had been struck by lightning. She recoiled, her mouth opening in a silent gasp of horror.

“They were fighting,” Piper continued, her young mind translating adult malice into a child’s vocabulary. “The mean lady was yelling at Daddy. She said that if Mommy didn't sign the papers, the police would come for both of them. She said they had to hide the 'drive' where no one would ever find it. She said the lawyers would search the house, and search the cars, and search the offices.”

Avery felt a cold dread settle deep into her bones. She looked down at the stuffed rabbit in Piper’s hands.

“They took Barnaby from my bed,” Piper whispered, a fresh tear rolling down her cheek. “Daddy used a sharp knife from the kitchen. He cut Barnaby’s tummy open. I saw him. He stuffed a small, hard silver thing deep inside Barnaby’s fluff. Then the mean lady used a pink needle and thread from Mommy’s old basket to sew him back up. Daddy told me that if I ever told anyone, or if I ever let Mommy touch Barnaby, he would send me away to a place where I would never see Mommy again.”

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.

Julian Reeves stood completely motionless, his legal mind instantly calculating the massive criminal implications of what the child was saying.

“But this morning,” Piper sobbed, looking up at Avery with unconditional devotion, “the mean lady brought me here in her car. She told me to sit on the bench outside and not to move. She said Mommy was inside being bad. But I know Mommy isn't bad. And I was scared Daddy was going to hurt Barnaby again. So I ran away to find someone safe. I found the police officer by the machines.”

Piper held the rabbit up toward Judge Carrington.

“The pink thread is still in his tummy,” Piper said. “It’s ugly. Look.”

Avery looked down. Sure enough, along the seam of the rabbit’s plush white belly, the neat, industrial white stitching had been crudely cut away for about three inches. It had been stitched back together with thick, clumsy, uneven loops of bright neon pink thread—the exact embroidery thread Avery kept in her crafting basket in the guest bedroom.

“Bailiff,” Judge Carrington commanded, her voice ringing with an absolute, terrifying authority. “Approach the child. Take custody of the plush item.”

The bailiff stepped forward, his expression solemn. He knelt down beside Piper, offering a gentle smile. “Can I hold Barnaby for a minute, sweetie? I promise I’ll be very careful with him.”

Piper looked at Avery, who nodded through her tears. Piper slowly released her grip, handing the rabbit to the officer.

The bailiff walked the toy up to the judicial bench, placing it directly in front of Judge Carrington.

The judge did not hesitate. She reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a small pair of silver office scissors. With deliberate, surgical precision, she slid the blade under the clumsy pink threads, snipping them one by one. She reached two fingers deep into the synthetic white stuffing of the toy.

When she pulled her hand out, she was holding a heavy, high-capacity, military-grade encrypted silver flash drive.
