Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedAs the contents of the flash drive continued to scroll across the large digital monitors, the depth of the betrayal became even more grotesque.

Julian Reeves moved to the clerk’s table, pointing to a series of spreadsheets inside the first folder—the one labeled Offshore Allocation.

“Your Honor,” Julian announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “If the court looks at lines 44 through 89 of this ledger, you will see a systematic draining of the Harlan Logistics corporate accounts over the last eighteen months. Nearly $4.2 million was transferred out of the domestic accounts. But look at the destination routing numbers.”

Judge Carrington leaned in close to her monitor, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the digital numbers. “Those are foreign routing codes. Grand Cayman and Panama.”

“Precisely,” Julian said, his eyes flashing with victory. “And look at the beneficiary name attached to those offshore accounts. It isn't Brent Harlan.”

The clerk highlighted the beneficiary line on the screen. The name flashed in bright yellow text: Sloane Mercer Holding, LLC.

A collective gasp swept through the gallery.

Brent Harlan’s head snapped toward Sloane with a sudden, violent jerk. His mouth fell open, his eyes widening with a completely different kind of shock. He looked at the screen, then at Sloane, then back at the screen.

“What?” Brent stammered, his voice cracking. “Sloane... what is that? That money was supposed to be moved to our joint corporate account in the Bahamas. Why is your private LLC listed as the sole beneficiary?”

Sloane didn't answer. She pulled her expensive cream blazer tighter around herself, her face completely pale, staring down at the table as if she could disappear into the wood grain.

The digital audio files continued to play automatically in the background, transitioning to an older recording, dated four months prior. The speakers crackled to life again.

This time, it was Sloane’s voice, speaking to an unidentified man—a man who sounded remarkably like her brother, Dr. Garrett Mercer.

“...Brent is completely oblivious, Garrett. He thinks we’re doing this to hide the money from Avery so he won't have to give her a settlement. He has no idea that once the divorce is final and Avery signs the property waiver, I’m locking him out of the Panama accounts entirely. He’s signing over the power of attorney to my holding company next week. He thinks he’s a genius corporate predator, but he’s just a useful idiot with a nice suit. Once the wife is out of the picture, I’m taking the money and moving to Zurich. Let him handle the fallout when the IRS finally audits the domestic logistics accounts.”

The courtroom erupted into a chaotic, deafening roar of laughter, murmurs, and shocked exclamations.

Brent looked as if he had been struck by a physical blow to the stomach. He staggered backward, his hand catching the edge of the table to keep from falling. He looked at Sloane, his mistress, the woman he had destroyed his family for, the woman he had brought into his home while his pregnant wife was at doctor appointments.

“You... you set me up?” Brent whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of total disbelief and pathetic rage. “I gave you everything, Sloane! I ruined my marriage for you! I risked my business for you! I gave you my daughter’s room! And you were going to rob me blind?”

Sloane finally snapped. She turned on him, her beautiful, cold face distorting into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

“Oh, shut up, Brent!” Sloane shrieked, her voice echoing horribly through the court. “You didn't give me anything! You’re a pathetic, arrogant, weak-minded insecure little man who needed a pretty girl on his arm to feel important. You cheated on a beautiful, devoted, pregnant wife who built your entire life with you. If you were stupid enough to trust me with your money while you were betraying her, you deserve exactly what you got!”

“Order!” Judge Carrington thundered, slamming her gavel down with a series of heavy, violent strikes that sounded like small explosions. “Order in this courtroom immediately!”

The gallery silenced, but the tension in the room remained explosive.

Brent and Sloane stood side by side at the defense table, but they were no longer a united front of victorious lovers. They were two cornered rats, baring their teeth at each other as the trap closed around them.
