Chapter 2 - I Gave You a Stage

The silence that followed was not empty.

It was full of years.

Years of Megan being told she was too sensitive.

Too unlucky.

Too dramatic.

Too hard to love.

Years of Amber arriving late to family dinners with lipstick perfectly applied and apologies that never quite apologized.

Years of boyfriends disappearing after private conversations with Amber.

Years of relatives saying, “Maybe he just wasn’t right for you,” while Amber sat nearby, smiling into her wine glass.

And now the same family stood beneath chandeliers pretending they had never watched the pattern.

Amber’s hand went to her throat.

“Megan, what is this?”

Megan almost laughed.

Even now, Amber wanted the right to ask questions first.

Megan rose carefully, ignoring the sting in her palm where a shard had cut her skin. Elliot moved like he might help, but he stopped before touching her.

That mattered.

This was not another man rescuing Megan.

This was Megan allowing the truth to stand beside her.

The wedding coordinator near the back lowered her tablet, eyes wide. She had been recording the scene after Amber threw the first glass of wine.

Not for drama.

For liability.

No one in the room knew how useful that would become.

Megan held up the phone.

“You wanted the whole family to hear you humiliate me,” she said. “So let’s let them hear the rest.”

Amber’s smile returned in a panicked version of itself.

“The rest of what?”

Elliot looked at her.

“The part where you told me exactly how you did it.”

Amber’s face drained further.

The groom’s uncle muttered, “Did what?”

Megan turned toward him.

Her voice shook, but it held.

“Ruined every relationship I brought near this family.”

Aunt Denise, Amber’s mother, stood from a table near the staircase.

“Megan, this is not the time.”

Megan looked at her.

“It was the time when your daughter kissed my date in front of eighty people.”

Denise sat back down.

Not because she agreed.

Because too many guests turned toward her.

Amber’s breathing quickened.

“You set me up.”

Megan’s eyes softened for half a second.

Not with pity.

May you like

With grief.

“No,” she said. “I gave you a stage. You performed exactly the way you always do.”
