CHAPTER 21: THE FROZEN CODE

## CHAPTER 21: THE FROZEN CODE

The water of Lake Michigan was calm, but the digital grid was not.

Three months after the peace of the park, the foundation’s main server room experienced a sudden, catastrophic temperature drop. The cooling fans roared to maximum capacity as a single, crimson line of code began to rewrite the security firewalls.

Hannah and I stood before the monitors, the green reflection illuminating our tense faces.

"It’s not an external hack, Evy," Hannah whispered, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard.

"It’s a dormant sequence."

"A ghost protocol?" I asked, my throat tightening.

"Worse," she said, tracking the data packet source.

"It’s an automated inheritance script, locked inside the deep cloud since 2005. It just woke up because Christian Sterling’s final appeal was denied this morning."

A single document materialized on the center screen, bypassing every encryption block we had spent three years building. It was a secondary corporate registry, hidden under a Swiss shell institution.

At the very top of the ledger was a name we had never heard.

Helena Sterling.

Arthur Sterling’s estranged daughter, who had vanished into the private banking sectors of Geneva twenty years ago.

Suddenly, the office telephone rang, the sound jarring against the hum of the servers.

I picked it up, my hand trembling slightly.

"Evelyn," a woman's voice said, smooth, cultured, and utterly devoid of warmth.

"The board is reassembling."
