A year passed like an unburdened breath.

The foundation had expanded into three neighboring districts, providing legal defense and safety resources for over five hundred children. Sophie was fifteen now, a brilliant student who spent her afternoons volunteering in the foundation’s library, her laughter a constant, beautiful reminder of what we had fought to protect.

Then, a final legal notice arrived from the federal district court.

Arthur Sterling had passed away in his medical prison unit at the age of eighty-four.

His daughter, Helena, had been sentenced to thirty-five years without the possibility of parole, locked away in a federal facility in West Virginia.

And Preston’s sentence had been officially commuted to time served due to his extraordinary cooperation in dismantling the international maritime shell network.

Hannah and I stood outside the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago, watching the heavy brass doors open.

Preston stepped out into the bright autumn sunshine. He wore a plain civilian jacket, his hair starting to grow back, his eyes blinking against the glare of the city. He looked smaller somehow, but the unhinged, volatile energy of the golden child was completely gone.

He stopped at the top of the stone steps, looking at us from twenty feet away.

He didn't move closer. He knew the boundaries.

"Thank you," he said, his voice barely carrying over the sound of the downtown traffic.

Hannah gave him a slow, solemn nod—a silent contract of mutual survival.

"Live a quiet life, Preston," she said softly.

"That’s all the truth ever asked of you."

He turned and walked down into the crowd, vanishing into the city stream, a man finally allowed to be ordinary.
