CHAPTER 9 Judgment Day

CHAPTER 9

Judgment Day

Two months later, the courtroom was packed.

Word of the case had spread far beyond our neighborhood. Reporters filled the back rows, legal observers occupied the gallery, and every seat was taken. What had begun as a family dispute had become a case that raised uncomfortable questions about domestic violence, parental control, and the limits of blind family loyalty.

I sat beside Elena.

She still tired easily, and the scars from her surgery reminded her every day of what had happened. But she held her head high.

Her hand rested gently over mine.

This time, we would face the truth together.

Across the courtroom sat my mother.

Carmen Herrera no longer wore expensive designer clothes or carefully styled jewelry. Dressed in the standard beige uniform of the detention center, she looked older than I remembered.

Yet one thing had not changed.

There was still no remorse in her eyes.

Only anger.

Only pride.

Only the stubborn belief that everyone else had betrayed her.

Laura and Roberto sat behind the defense table.

They avoided looking at me.

Perhaps, for the first time in their lives, doubt had begun to creep in.

The prosecutor presented the final evidence.

Medical experts explained Elena's injuries in careful detail.

The obstetric surgeon testified that the trauma from the suitcase caused a catastrophic placental abruption and massive hemorrhaging, making the emergency hysterectomy the only option to save her life.

A neonatologist described Mateo's birth.

"He had no spontaneous breathing."

"No detectable heartbeat."

"He required advanced resuscitation immediately after delivery."

The courtroom grew silent.

Every medical opinion pointed to the same conclusion.

The assault had nearly claimed two lives.

Then the surveillance footage played one final time.

No edits.

No interruptions.

The courtroom watched my mother deliberately lift the suitcase.

Aim.

Throw.

The impact echoed through the speakers.

No one spoke.

There was nothing left to argue.

Attorney Licón's recorded conversation was played next.

His discussion of provoking a confrontation and preparing legal action destroyed the defense's claim that everything had been an unfortunate accident.

The judge listened without expression.

When both sides rested their cases, the courtroom fell into complete silence.

After a brief recess, the judge returned.

Everyone stood.

The written judgment seemed to last forever.

Finally, the judge looked directly toward my mother.

"After reviewing all testimony, medical evidence, surveillance recordings, and expert reports, this court finds the defendant guilty."

My mother remained perfectly still.

The judge continued.

"Guilty of aggravated domestic violence."

"Guilty of causing life-threatening bodily injury."

"Guilty of intentionally inflicting severe physical harm resulting in permanent reproductive loss."

He paused before announcing the sentence.

"This court hereby sentences Carmen Herrera to twelve years of imprisonment."

A gasp spread through the courtroom.

Laura burst into tears.

Roberto shouted in protest until court officers ordered him to remain silent.

My mother slowly stood.

She pointed directly at me.

"You'll burn in hell, Javier!"

"A son who sends his own mother to prison is cursed forever!"

Every eye in the courtroom turned toward me.

Years ago...

Those words would have destroyed me.

Not anymore.

I met her gaze calmly.

"The hell I escaped..."

"...was spending my life trying to earn the love of someone who never truly knew how to love."

For the first time, my mother had no answer.

Court officers escorted her from the courtroom.

She continued shouting as the heavy doors closed behind her.

Then...

May you like

Silence.

The case was over.
