Chapter 8 - The Conspiracy UncoveredClara reached into the front passenger seat and picked up a heavy, scuffed leather briefcase. She popped the latches with two loud clicks, revealing a thick stack of financial documents, old bank statements, and a compact, encrypted external hard drive.

"This is the rest of what your mother couldn't say in that letter," Clara said, placing the briefcase on the console between David and Elise. "Eleven years of documentation. Every shell company, every offshore routing code, and every shipping manifesto Arthur Vance used to build his empire on the blood of his competitors."

Julian Reeves—no, David—stared at the documents, his legal and corporate background instantly identifying the massive criminal scope. "This isn't just corporate fraud, Elise. This is federal racketeering. If this ledger hits the Department of Justice, your father doesn't just lose his business; he goes to a maximum-security prison for the rest of his natural life."

Elise looked at the encrypted drive. "Where is she, Clara? Where is my mother right now?"

"She’s at the old water filtration plant on the south side," Clara said, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper. "We were supposed to meet there at noon. But twenty minutes ago, before I lost contact with her radio, she sent a distress signal. Arthur's men intercepted her vehicle on the bridge."

Suddenly, the heavy metal garage door at the entrance of the warehouse basement violently rattled.

The sound of screeching tires echoed from the street above. Through the small, high windows of the basement, the flashing red and blue lights of unmarked security vehicles illuminated the concrete walls.

"They’re here," David hissed, his eyes locking onto the basement entrance. "Clara, how did they find this location?"

Clara looked down at the dashboard, a sudden look of absolute horror crossing her face as she noticed a tiny, flashing red light built into the underside of the leather briefcase she had just opened.

"The briefcase," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "Arthur didn't just find Eleanor’s safehouse... he let her escape with this briefcase. It has a military-grade proximity transponder built into the lining. He didn't just track David’s car... he’s been tracking me."

A heavy thud shook the garage door as a battering ram hit the steel frame from the outside.

"We don't have time to run," David said, his voice instantly shifting into an aggressive, survival register. He grabbed the briefcase and the encrypted drive, stuffing them into the folds of Elise’s wedding dress. "Clara, does this warehouse have an old freight elevator to the upper floors?"

"Yes," Clara said, scrambling out of the car. "But it's manual. We have to pull the cables ourselves."

"Go!" David roared as the steel garage door finally buckled with a deafening screech of ripping metal.
