Chapter 9 - The Trap is SprungThe interior of the abandoned warehouse was a dark, cavernous maze of rusted iron pillars and crumbling concrete dust.

Elise ran as fast as the heavy layers of her wedding dress would allow, her white satin shoes ripping against the sharp gravel and debris littering the floor. Behind them, the loud, echoey sounds of heavy combat boots hitting the concrete signaled that Arthur Vance's corporate extraction team had breached the perimeter.

"Freeze!" a voice boomed through the darkness from the garage entrance. "Identify yourselves!"

David didn't stop. He threw his shoulder against the rusted iron gate of the old freight elevator, forcing it open with a loud, metallic shriek. "Elise, Clara, get in! Now!"

They scrambled onto the wooden platform of the elevator just as a bright tactical flashlight beam swept across the corridor, illuminating the white fabric of Elise's gown like a beacon.

Bang!

A sharp, deafening gunshot echoed through the warehouse, the bullet ricocheting off the iron pillar inches above David’s head with a shower of sparks.

Clara grabbed the heavy hemp rope connected to the elevator's manual pulley system, hauling downward with all her weight. David joined her, his muscles straining against the ancient iron counterweights. With a violent jerk, the wooden platform began to rise slowly into the darkness of the second floor just as three armed men in black tactical gear sprinted into the elevator shaft below.

"They’re going up!" one of the men shouted into a radio. "Notify Mr. Vance. We have the target cornered in the main structure."

The elevator groaned to a halt on the third-floor industrial cat-walk. Elise collapsed against the wooden railing, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. Her beautiful white gown was now covered in black grease and concrete soot, the elegant pearl details on the back crushed and ruined.

"Elise."

A voice spoke from the shadows of the third-floor office platform.

It wasn't the voice of a security guard. It was a familiar, deeply sophisticated voice that Elise had listened to her entire life. The voice that had read her bedtime stories, the voice that had approved her college tuition, the voice that had told her she looked beautiful in her wedding dress just four hours ago.

Arthur Vance stepped out into the faint shafts of sunlight filtering through the broken skylight.

He wore his immaculate tailored wedding suit, though his tie was slightly loosened. His grey hair was perfectly combed, and his face held the expression of a disappointed, weary father rather than a corporate executioner. In his right hand, he held a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol.

"Dad..." Elise whispered, her voice cracking as she stepped backward toward the edge of the catwalk.

"You shouldn't have opened the locket, Elise," Arthur said, his voice carrying a calm, chilling serenity that was far more terrifying than rage. "I spent eleven years protecting you from the truth. I built an empire to ensure you never wanted for anything. And you threw it all away because a ghost whispered your name at a bus station."
