Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Came Back from the DeadMy mother came to the estate two days later.

I was recovering from the gunshot.

Mia sat beside me.

Elena stood near the window.

Then the door opened.

My mother walked inside.

She looked older.

Her hair was silver.

Her face thinner.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

I stared.

She stared back.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Mia ran toward her.

“Grandma!”

My mother dropped to her knees.

They embraced.

I looked at Elena.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“I knew she was alive.”

“You lied to me.”

“I was protecting you.”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence had become the family motto.

Everyone was protecting someone.

And everyone was destroying someone else in the process.

My mother sat beside me.

“Adrian.”

“Tell me the truth.”

She nodded.

“Your father wasn't innocent.”

I waited.

“He helped build The Circle.”

I felt no surprise.

“He wanted out.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he realized they were going to use you.”

“For what?”

“To control the company.”

She looked toward Mia.

“Then Daniel betrayed them.”

“And Victor?”

“He took over.”

I stared at her.

“Why did you hide Mia?”

“Because Daniel wanted her.”

“Why?”

“Because your father had left evidence inside something only Mia carried.”

“The rabbit.”

She nodded.

“The recording.”

My mother explained.

The rabbit contained a tiny memory card.

On it was the final conversation between Lorenzo Moretti and Victor.

It proved Victor had ordered my father's murder.

But there was more.

The recording also revealed names of people still active inside The Circle.

Victor had been only one piece.

My mother looked at me.

“You have to release it.”

“If I do, innocent people may be hurt.”

“If you don't, The Circle survives.”

I looked at Mia.

She was playing with Mr. Rabbit.

I realized the choice was no longer about power.

It was about ending the cycle.

That evening, we extracted the recording.

We sent copies to federal investigators, journalists, and several independent attorneys.

Within forty-eight hours, arrests began.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Companies were investigated.

Politicians resigned.

The Circle began collapsing.

But one name remained.

Daniel Carter.

He had disappeared.

And he still wanted Mia.

Three weeks later, I received a letter.

No stamp.

No envelope markings.

Just one sentence.

You can't protect her forever.

I burned it.

Then I walked into Mia's room.

She was asleep.

I sat beside her.

She opened her eyes.

“Daddy?”

“I'm here.”

“Did the bad man come back?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

I smiled.

“I promise.”

She reached for my hand.

I held it.

For the first time in my life, I understood something.

Being powerful didn't mean nobody could hurt you.

It meant you refused to let fear decide what you loved.

And I loved this little girl.

More than the company.

More than the empire.

May you like

More than anything.

If Daniel came back, I would be ready.
