Chapter 9 - A Different Kind of FamilyOne year later, the Moretti estate felt different.

There were children's drawings on the refrigerator.

Toys beneath the stairs.

A pink bicycle beside the garage.

And one stuffed rabbit permanently occupying a chair at the dining table.

I had sold several properties.

Closed businesses that had been tied to my father's old network.

Changed the company.

Changed myself.

People still called me Adrian Moretti.

Still feared the name.

But Mia didn't care.

To her, I was simply Dad.

One Sunday morning, I walked into the kitchen.

Mia was sitting on the counter.

Elena was making pancakes.

My mother was reading the newspaper.

Three generations of a family that had nearly been destroyed by secrets sat in one room.

It felt impossible.

Mia looked at me.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still a mafia boss?”

I nearly dropped my coffee.

Elena burst out laughing.

My mother lowered the newspaper.

I sighed.

“No.”

“What are you?”

“A businessman.”

She thought about it.

“That's boring.”

“Thank you.”

She grinned.

Then she ran to me.

“Dad!”

I lifted her.

She whispered:

“I love you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I love you too.”

Elena watched us.

Her eyes were wet.

I walked toward her.

“Are you okay?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“For the first time in years.”

I kissed her forehead.

Then Mia shouted:

“Gross!”

We laughed.

Later that afternoon, I found Elena sitting in the garden.

She looked peaceful.

I sat beside her.

“You know,” I said, “when Mia knocked on my door that night, I thought she was asking me to save her mother.”

Elena smiled.

“She was.”

“I didn't realize she was saving me too.”

Elena looked at me.

“From what?”

“From becoming my father.”

She reached for my hand.

“You chose differently.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“Because of you.”

She smiled.

“Because of her.”

We looked toward Mia.

She was chasing butterflies across the lawn.

May you like

The girl who had once been barefoot and terrified now ran through sunlight without looking over her shoulder.

That was enough.
