Part 1: Sophia Lane knew Margaret Cross hated her long before the party began.

Sophia Lane knew Margaret Cross hated her long before the party began. She knew it from the way Margaret smiled without warmth, from the way the staff avoided her eyes, from the way every woman in the grand villa wore silk and diamonds while Sophia had been told the evening was “family casual.” So she arrived in a plain white shirt and dark trousers. And Margaret noticed immediately.

The Cross villa glowed like something built to intimidate people. A sweeping marble staircase curved above the ballroom. A crystal chandelier threw warm golden light over the polished floor. Guests in expensive suits and elegant gowns gathered below, waiting for Ethan Cross to announce his engagement. Sophia was supposed to be happy.

Instead, Margaret asked her to come upstairs. At the top of the staircase, away from Ethan and the guests, Margaret turned with her pearl necklace shining against her black velvet dress. “You will leave tonight before Ethan makes any announcement,” she said. Sophia’s chest tightened. “I love him.” Margaret’s eyes went cold. “You don’t deserve my son.”

Sophia tried to stay calm, but her voice shook. “You don’t get to decide my worth.” For one second, Margaret’s face twisted with anger. Then she shoved Sophia hard in the shoulder. Sophia lost her balance. Her heel slipped. A cry broke from her lips as she tumbled down the marble steps. One shoe flew loose.

The ballroom fell into stunned silence as she landed at the foot of the staircase, shaken and struggling to push herself up. Guests stared. No one moved. Margaret stepped down a few stairs, looking at her as if Sophia had embarrassed the house by falling. “You are nothing but a common small-town woman,” Margaret said, loud enough for the room to hear. “No family name, no status, no worth.” Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.

Then the grand doors burst open. Ethan rushed into the hall. The second he saw Sophia on the floor, his face changed. He dropped beside her, trembling with panic. “Sophia, are you hurt?” Margaret lifted her chin. “She lost her footing.” Sophia looked up at Ethan, her voice barely steady. “She told me to leave.” Ethan slowly stood. For the first time all night, Margaret looked uncertain. Then Ethan turned toward his mother and said the words Sophia had begged him never to reveal in that room.
