PART 2: Ethan's Secret

THE WOMAN THEY CALLED "WORTHLESS"

The ballroom was so silent that Sophia could hear her own breathing.

Every guest was staring.

Every eye moved between Ethan, Sophia, and Margaret.

Margaret stood halfway down the staircase, still composed on the surface, but something in her expression had changed.

Fear.

A tiny crack in the confidence she had carried all evening.

Ethan helped Sophia to her feet.

His hands trembled.

Not from weakness.

From anger.

He turned toward his mother.

"Did you push her?"

Margaret crossed her arms.

"Don't be ridiculous."

Several guests exchanged nervous glances.

Everyone had seen Sophia fall.

But nobody wanted to challenge Margaret Cross.

Margaret controlled half the city.

Her family's name opened doors.

Closed investigations.

Built careers.

Destroyed others.

She knew it.

And everyone else knew it too.

"I told her she wasn't right for you," Margaret said coldly. "That's all."

Sophia lowered her eyes.

The humiliation burned worse than the pain in her shoulder.

Then Ethan spoke.

"No."

His voice echoed through the hall.

"You told her she wasn't worthy."

Margaret's jaw tightened.

"Because she isn't."

Gasps spread through the crowd.

But Ethan wasn't finished.

For years he had remained silent whenever his mother criticized Sophia.

For years he had promised Sophia things would get better.

For years he had tried to keep peace between the two women.

Tonight, something finally broke.

He stepped forward.

"You think she's beneath us?"

Margaret lifted her chin.

"I know she is."

Ethan laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was the sound of someone finally realizing how blind he had been.

Then he looked around at every guest in the room.

"Maybe it's time everyone learned the truth."

Sophia's heart stopped.

"No..." she whispered.

She knew what he was about to do.

And she had begged him for years never to reveal it.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she didn't want people treating her differently.

Margaret frowned.

"What truth?"

Ethan slowly reached inside his jacket.

Then he removed a folded document.

A document that instantly caught the attention of several business executives standing nearby.

Margaret's confidence began to fade.

"What is that?"

Ethan looked directly at her.

"The reason you've spent three years insulting the wrong woman."

The room grew even quieter.

Sophia closed her eyes.

She already knew what was coming.

Ethan unfolded the papers.

Then he handed them to one of the senior board members standing nearby.

The older man adjusted his glasses.

His face changed immediately.

Shock.

Then disbelief.

Then respect.

"What is it?" someone asked.

The man looked up.

His voice sounded almost nervous.

"This can't be right..."

Margaret snatched the papers from his hands.

She scanned the first page.

Her expression froze.

The color drained from her face.

"No."

She flipped to the second page.

Then the third.

"No..."

Around her, whispers began spreading through the ballroom.

Because the documents revealed something nobody had expected.

Not even the city's elite.

Not even Margaret.

Sophia Lane wasn't a small-town nobody.

She wasn't struggling.

She wasn't dependent on Ethan.

And she certainly wasn't after the Cross family fortune.

In fact...

Her family was worth several times more than the Cross empire.

The villa.

The businesses.

The investments.

The private foundations.

Entire sections of the city operated on companies connected to her family.

Companies she would one day inherit.

Margaret stared at Sophia as if seeing her for the first time.

"You lied."

Sophia finally looked up.

"No."

Margaret's voice cracked.

"You told us your father owned a small logistics company."

Sophia nodded.

"He does."

The guests exchanged confused looks.

Then Ethan smiled.

"A small logistics company that controls shipping contracts in twelve countries."

The room exploded with whispers.

One woman nearly dropped her champagne glass.

A banker standing near the back suddenly looked very uncomfortable.

Several guests recognized the company name immediately.

It wasn't small.

It was a giant.

A corporation so private that most people never realized who actually owned it.

Margaret's hands shook.

For three years she had mocked Sophia's background.

For three years she had treated her like an outsider.

For three years she had bragged about the Cross family wealth.

And all that time...

Sophia had quietly been wealthier than every person in the room.

Combined.

But then Ethan revealed something even worse.

Something that turned Margaret completely pale.

He looked at his mother and said:

"That's not the secret I was protecting."

Margaret froze.

"What?"

Ethan slowly reached for another envelope.

This one was older.

Sealed.

Untouched.

And when Margaret saw the handwriting on the front...

She nearly collapsed.

Because she recognized exactly who had written it.

Her late husband.

The founder of the Cross empire.

The one man whose secrets were buried with him.

Or so she thought.

Ethan held up the envelope.

"The lawyers gave this to me six months ago."

The room held its breath.

Margaret whispered:

"No..."

But Ethan was already opening it.

And inside was a letter that would destroy everything Margaret had spent twenty years building.
