“I need to tell you something else,” Noah said, his back to us.

David and I exchanged a glance and stood up.

“I withdrew from college yesterday,” Noah confessed.

The fragile peace shattered. “What?” I gasped, my immediate instinct to panic rushing back.

“I had already missed too many classes. The dean suggested a medical leave, but I was afraid you would see it as a failure.”

“Noah, a medical leave is not a failure!” I insisted, stepping toward him. “When were you going to tell us?”

“I wasn't.”

David’s face hardened. “What were you planning to do, Noah?”

“Leave.”

The word hung in the air, heavy and terrifying.

“Go where?” I asked, my voice rising.

“Seattle. My friend Mason’s brother said I could work at his landscaping company. I thought if I left, Dad could find another job and you could keep yours. Everyone could just stop circling around me like I'm a broken glass waiting to shatter.”

I closed the distance between us, grabbing his arms. “You are not the reason this family is hurting!”

“I am the reason Aunt Rebecca was on that road!” he shouted back, his voice echoing off the brick walls.

“She loved driving you places,” David intervened firmly. “She volunteered before anyone even asked her to.”

Noah pressed both hands against his temples, shaking his head frantically. “Every time I look at either of you, I see what my survival cost!”

“Your survival did not cost Rebecca her life. The accident did,” I said firmly, refusing to let him carry that burden any longer. “You survived, Noah. And that is incredibly painful. But surviving doesn't make you guilty. It makes you someone who has to carry love forward.”
