Part 2: The Undercover Test

The morning of the wedding arrived with a crisp, brilliant sun. The flagship Ellison Crown Hotel was a hive of activity. Florists carried in thousands of white roses, an elite orchestra tuned their instruments, and catering staff polished crystal chalices. It was a million-dollar fairy tale, funded entirely by a private family hospitality sponsorship that Margaret had quietly approved months prior.
But Margaret did not arrive in a limousine, nor did she wear a designer gown.
Instead, she walked through the employee entrance at 6:00 a.m., dressed in the standard navy-blue synthetic uniform of the housekeeping staff. She tied her hair back, left her jewelry in her car, and took a mop and bucket. To the staff on shift, she was just another temporary worker hired to handle the massive rush.

She walked the corridors, observing. She watched Vanessa treat the makeup artists like servants, her voice dripping with condescension. She saw Preston walk past an elderly custodian without even acknowledging his existence, nearly knocking the man's cart over without an apology.
The ballroom was breathtaking, a sea of silk, gold accents, and sparkling chandeliers. But to Margaret, the air felt suffocatingly cold. She realized with devastating clarity that her son had not just forgotten where he came from—he actively despised it. The stage was set, and the test was about to begin.
