Part 6: The Unraveling

"This is insane!" Vanessa erupted, stepping forward, her manicured nails digging into her palms. "You can't do this! This is a wedding! This is a contract!"

"No," Margaret countered softly, looking directly into Vanessa’s panicked eyes. "This is a contract. And you have breached it."

The hotel’s chief legal counsel, who had been standing near the side entrance monitoring the high-profile event, stepped out into the open. He nodded firmly to Margaret. He had witnessed the entire event. Three operational managers had witnessed it. Worse for Preston and Vanessa, three hundred guests with smartphones had captured every single second of the humiliation on video.

Preston finally found his voice, taking a desperate step toward his mother. "Mom, please. Don't do this here. Not in front of everyone."

Margaret looked around the magnificent, echoing ballroom—the very place where, just minutes ago, her own flesh and blood had watched her bleed on the stone and decided she wasn't worth the social embarrassment.

"Where would you prefer, Preston?" she asked, her voice dripping with quiet disappointment. "Somewhere private? Somewhere nobody could see your choices? You wanted an audience for your wedding, Preston. Now you have one for your character."

His face completely crumpled. For a fleeting second, Margaret saw a ghost of the boy he used to be—the sweet child who once saved half his school sandwich because he thought his mother was working too hard to buy lunch. But that boy was gone, suffocated by greed.

Vanessa, realizing her perfect day was evaporating, tried to weaponize her own social status. "You can't cancel my wedding," she hissed, drawing herself up to her full height. "Do you even know who my family is?"

Margaret closed the folder with a definitive, heavy snap. "No. But I know who is paying your bill."
