Part 4: The Order of the Hidden Chair

The silence in the ballroom grew heavy, thick with the uncomfortably loud complaints of Vanessa. But the dynamic shifted entirely when a sharp, authoritative voice cut through the murmurs.

"Step back immediately."

Mr. Ellis, the general manager of the flagship property, strode into the center of the ballroom. He had worked for the Ellison Crown chain for seventeen years. He didn't just know the protocols; he knew the woman on the floor. When his eyes fell upon Margaret in her damp uniform, his face drained of all color. A visible tremor shook his hands.

Margaret looked up at him, a cold, unmistakable authority returning to her eyes despite her position on the floor. She held up a single object she had slipped from her apron pocket: a sleek, matte-black corporate card with a holographic crown emblem.

Mr. Ellis understood instantly. He turned to the orchestra, raising his hand.

"Stop the music. Now," he commanded.

The violins screeched to an awkward halt. The servers stopped mid-stride, trays of champagne hovering in the air. Even the main photographer lowered his camera, sensing a massive shift in the room's gravity.

Vanessa gave a sharp, nervous laugh, trying to convince herself she was still the director of this play. "Sponsored?" she mocked, turning to Preston. "What is he talking about? Preston, tell this man to back off."

Preston couldn't speak. He was staring at the black card in his mother's hand. It was the same card he had seen only once before, years ago, symbolizing the absolute apex of corporate power.

Mr. Ellis drew himself up, his voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom. "By order of the woman this family called a cleaner, every sponsored service in this ballroom is frozen immediately."
