Chapter 11 - The Grieving WidowerBy sunrise, the performance had begun exactly as predicted. News helicopters hovered over the marina, their blades chopping the morning air. Reporters gathered in throngs behind police barriers while Coast Guard emergency crews officially searched the coastline.

Adrian appeared before the cameras wearing a gray sweater and no coat, performing the role of a man so consumed by grief that he was unaware of the morning chill. Celeste stood a few paces behind him, dressed appropriately in mourning black, her head bowed.

“My wife had been under enormous emotional pressure,” Adrian told the sea of microphones, his voice thick with calculated emotion. “Pregnancy affected her more deeply than many people understood. I tried to reach her, but the deck was wet... She moved so quickly.”

His voice broke at exactly the right moment. He looked down. “I should have protected her.”

From a secure, underground medical suite beneath my father’s country home, I watched him produce a single, perfect tear on the television screen. The world believed him.

News channels began airing B-roll photographs from our wedding, charity galas, and vacation trips. Pundits and commentators discussed the heavy emotional burden faced by wealthy women living under intense public scrutiny. A former employee, undoubtedly paid off, claimed I had appeared withdrawn and erratic at a recent company dinner. Reporters began quoting phrases taken directly from the forged medical notes Adrian had leaked to a friendly journalist.
