Chapter 12 - The Usurper MovesFor the first day in the bunker, watching the news coverage, I wanted to reveal myself immediately. I wanted to scream the truth to the cameras. Miriam Shaw refused to let me.

“He believes the plan succeeded,” the attorney said, pouring a cup of coffee. “Let him act. The more he moves, the tighter the noose gets.”
Adrian acted faster and with more arrogance than even she had expected. Within forty-eight hours, Celeste’s luggage arrived at my penthouse. Building security footage, routed directly to Julian’s tablet, showed her entering the lobby with six large suitcases and leaving two hours later wearing my mother’s vintage cashmere coat.
On the third day, Adrian submitted a forged power of attorney to the family’s private bank. He attempted to access offshore accounts controlled exclusively by my biometric authorization, claiming emergency estate provisions. The bank manager, pre-warned by Miriam, denied the request citing "technical delays" and quietly forwarded the forged documents to federal investigators.
On the fourth morning, confident that his path was clear, Adrian called an emergency board meeting at Ashford Maritime Group. He claimed the company faced critical instability because its controlling shareholder was missing and presumed dead. Under a fabricated proxy agreement, he demanded temporary voting authority to "guide the ship through the storm."
He scheduled the hostile takeover meeting for ten o’clock in the morning.

At nine thirty, I stood in front of a mirror in the safe house and dressed in a tailored white suit. The bruises on my arms from his grip had darkened to a deep, ugly purple. A yellow mark remained along the side of my neck where Adrian’s hand had pressed against my skin. My throat was still raw from the saltwater, and every deep breath hurt.
I left the bruises uncovered. I wanted the board to see exactly what he had done.
