Chapter 6 - The Medical SabotageTwo days after I found the insurance policy, the second warning arrived. My obstetrician’s office called to cancel an appointment I had scheduled months earlier.

The receptionist sounded professional but slightly confused. “Mrs. Cross, we're just confirming that your records have been transferred to Dr. Halpern's office at your husband’s request.”

I gripped the phone tightly. “My husband does not manage my medical care.”

There was a long, uncomfortable pause on the line. According to their system, Adrian had submitted legal paperwork identifying himself as my authorized medical decision-maker. The justification cited was my supposed "severe emotional instability" and inability to make rational choices regarding my pregnancy.

I immediately requested a copy of the updated file. When it arrived via secure email, I read it with growing horror. It contained notes from a doctor I had never met—a Dr. Halpern—describing me as deeply depressed, impulsive, and possibly dangerous to myself. The language was brilliant in its subtlety. None of it overtly claimed I had attempted self-harm. Instead, it carefully constructed a believable pattern of mental decline that could later be used by a grieving husband to explain a tragic, sudden accident.

I did not confront Adrian. Instead, I bypassed the new doctor and contacted Dr. Elaine Foster, the physician who had treated me since the very beginning of my pregnancy.

She confirmed my worst fears. Someone from Adrian’s office had repeatedly pressured her to add concerns about my mental state to my official charts. When she refused to compromise her ethics, my appointment was abruptly transferred. Dr. Foster sounded frightened over the phone.

“Helena, I don’t want to overreact,” she warned, “but you should speak to an attorney.”

“I already plan to,” I replied, staring out the window at the city my husband planned to conquer.
