Part 17: The Residual Network

The transition from a completed federal bankruptcy auction to the quiet expansion of our new firm took exactly three weeks.

I sat on the private terrace of our coastal workspace, the morning air carrying the crisp scent of the ocean below.

Valeria was inside the adjacent studio room, focusing on her data entry programs with a newfound sense of security.

But at exactly 10:14 a.m. on a Tuesday, an anomalous background tracking alert pinged on Naomi Pierce’s primary dashboard terminal.

A dormant, high-voltage analog data trunk line, originally buried beneath the old Torres workshop floor in 1998, had just registered an active signal handshake.

The access sequence was using a deeply encrypted system signature that had once belonged to Brenda’s father, the original founder.

"Elias," Naomi said, stepping onto the terrace with her diagnostic screen raised toward the sunlight.

"Someone is physically tapping into the subterranean infrastructure line to extract the core client archives from twenty years ago."

"The vault is located three stories beneath the concrete foundations we liquidated during the federal court clearing," she explained.

I stood up slowly, my expression flat, my mind instantly calculating the remaining links of the old family network.

The data pull wasn't being conducted remotely over an encrypted satellite proxy; it required a direct manual connection to the copper wiring underground.

"Brenda’s old real estate executor, Marcus Vance, is trying to retrieve the historical corporate ledger blocks," I noted.

"He wants to use those high-value names to salvage his remaining commercial liabilities before our system audit exposes his line."

"Assemble the specialized field security unit, Naomi," I commanded, my jaw locking into an absolute line of stone.

"We are going to lock the perimeter gates while his technicians are still trapped down inside the dark grid."
