Part 1: The Gathering on the Asphalt

The roar of Manhattan traffic felt like a distant murmur as Eleanor Vance remained on her knees, her bespoke silk trousers ruining on the damp pavement. She didn't care. Her hands, usually adorned with flawless emeralds, trembled as they cupped the hollow cheeks of the boy who had spent his life in the shadows of the city.

Her wealthy son, Leo, stood frozen in his tailored navy blazer. He looked down at the boy—Oliver—and then at his mother. The resemblance was no longer just a shocking coincidence; it was a biological accusation.

  • They had the exact same fracture in their amber-colored eyes.

  • They shared the identical, slight asymmetry in their jawlines.

  • Even the way they held their shoulders under stress was a perfect, eerie mirror.

"Get up, Mom," Leo whispered, his voice cracking as he looked around at the gathering crowd of onlookers and clicking smartphones. "We need to get him out of the street. We need to go home."

Eleanor stood up slowly, her knees shaking. Without a second thought, she unbuttoned her thousands-dollar cashmere coat and draped it over Oliver’s shivering, dirt-streaked shoulders. Oliver flinched at the sudden warmth, unaccustomed to kindness that didn't demand a price.

"You’re coming with us," Eleanor said, her voice shifting from a sob to a tone of absolute, protective steel. "Both of my sons are coming home."
