Part 4: Dismantling the Dynasty

The sheer cruelty of the calculation shattered whatever grief Eleanor had left for her late husband. She closed the laptop with a sharp snap. The time for weeping on sidewalks had passed.
"Leo," Eleanor said, turning to her well-dressed son. "Tomorrow is the annual shareholders' meeting for Vance International. Your father's estate currently holds 51 percent of the voting blocks, which you are set to legally inherit next month."
Leo looked at his brother, then back to his mother. The expensive navy blazer suddenly felt like a weight around his neck. "I don't want it. Not like this."
"You aren't giving it up," Eleanor said, an icy smile touching her lips. "You're going to share it."
The next morning, the corporate boardroom of Vance International was filled with the city's most powerful executives. They expected a routine confirmation of Leo's upcoming ascension to the chairmanship.

The company's chief legal officer stood up, his face pale. "Eleanor, this is highly irregular. The bylaws state—"

"The bylaws were built on a criminal conspiracy perpetrated by Richard Vance," Eleanor interrupted, her voice cutting through the corporate room like a scalpel. "The documentation of child abandonment, medical fraud, and corporate deception has already been delivered to the federal district attorney. You can either certify this restructuring today, or you can watch the Vance stock collapse to zero during the criminal indictments tomorrow."
The board looked at the two young men standing side by side. The genetic truth was undeniable. The vote was passed before the opening bell of the exchange.
