Part 7: The Collapse of the Dominoes

Diane slowly turned to her daughter, her voice filled with a mixture of shock and dawning horror. "Vanessa... is that actually true?"
Vanessa’s face flushed a deep, guilty crimson. "They were supposed to be my bridesmaids! They were supposed to support me!"
"By participating in the emotional abuse of a frightened child?" Claire asked.
Vanessa grabbed her designer handbag from the sofa. "I’m leaving. This place is psycho."
"You may leave," Elena countered smoothly, holding up a digital tablet, "after we address your outstanding balance. Your purchase agreement explicitly states that ownership of the Belladonna gown remains with Laurent House until final payment has cleared. Your payment was due exactly fourteen days ago."
"There was a minor issue with the bank!" Diane interjected quickly.
Elena tapped the screen. "The first corporate card you provided was declined. The second personal card was also declined. Your office then sent a formal request asking us to release a $48,000 couture gown without any payment clearance."
Vanessa folded her arms defiantly. "We are prominent New York clients. Your boutique makes exceptions for people of our status."
Claire looked at her niece, her voice dripping with quiet disdain.
"People of your status? You mean people who manipulate, lie, and abuse staff to maintain a lifestyle they can't even afford?"
Elena carefully inspected the reclaimed gown beneath the specialized studio work lights. "The security deposit will be fully withheld for restoration. A seam near the left waist has been heavily stretched due to your resistance during the recovery procedure, and there is a fresh champagne stain on the interior silk lining."
Diane stared at the manager in utter confusion. "What security deposit? We didn't pay a deposit."
"The one charged to your third backup card early this morning, Ms. Mercer," Elena replied.

Diane slowly turned to Vanessa, the air leaving her lungs. "Vanessa... you told me this gown was fully paid for. You told everyone online that Laurent House had chosen you as a 'featured bride' and gifted you the dress."
Vanessa’s defensive silence was the only answer Diane needed.
