Part 4: The Campaign of Whispers

For one glorious, unscripted second, every single mask slipped.
Lila’s mouth parted in a silent gasp, her hand dropping from her waist as if she had been burned. Claudine’s champagne glass paused midair, her perfectly manicured fingers freezing solid. And Victor’s handsome smile turned to brittle plaster, cracking under the weight of an impossible reality.
Then, the sociopath recovered.
"At forty-five?" Victor said softly, his voice dropping into a tone that was wrapped in concern but dripping with psychological cruelty. "Mara... are you absolutely sure? Scans can be incredibly deceptive."
Claudine let out a theatrical, heavy sigh, adjusting her pearls. "Nature can be deeply confusing at your age, darling. Hysterical pregnancies, hormonal shifts... it's all very common during the pre-menopausal years."
Lila stepped forward, her eyes instantly filling with well-rehearsed, damp sympathy. "Oh, Mara... I just hope and pray that it’s healthy. At this stage, the risks are just so astronomical."
There it was. Not a single word of joy. No congratulations. No embrace from my husband. Just cold, immediate damage control.
Victor stepped into my personal space, his hands reaching out to grip my shoulders with a force that felt entirely like a restraint. "We should keep this completely quiet, Mara. Until we fully understand the situation."
"The situation?" I asked, tilting my head.
"You’ve been under an immense amount of professional stress," he said, his tone softening into the soothing cadence of a captor. "Hormones. False positives. Misread scans. Let's not make fools of ourselves to the board."
I smiled, a small, cold movement of my lips. "The doctor heard a distinct heartbeat, Victor."
Claudine’s expression hardened into granite. "Doctors make mistakes."
May you like
"So do husbands," I replied smoothly.
Victor’s gaze sharpened into a razor-thin stare. The battle lines had been drawn in ink, but they were about to be fought in blood.
