Part 5: The Web of Evidence

That night, Victor quietly moved his things into the executive guest wing, claiming he didn't want to disturb my "fragile state of rest." By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, their coordinated campaign to destroy me had officially begun.
Victor called an informal meeting with senior partners, gently suggesting that I take an immediate, indefinite medical leave of absence from Lang & Vale Holdings due to "unexpected personal strain." Claudine spent her afternoon making strategic phone calls to our legacy board members, whispering softly that I was becoming "dangerously emotional" and "unstable" under the influence of late-life hormones.
They thought they were operating in total secrecy. But entitlement makes people sloppy.
On the fourth afternoon of my supposed breakdown, Lila’s phone slipped. She sent a rapid-fire encrypted message meant for Victor directly to my private number, deleting it less than sixty seconds later.
It was sixty seconds too late. I had already cached the notification.
[DELETED MESSAGE - LILA HARROW]
She knows something. She’s looking at the corporate ledgers differently.
We need to accelerate the timeline and move before the quarterly voting session.
I took a pristine screenshot, saving it to an encrypted drive.
They had chosen the wrong woman to break. Victor genuinely believed that twelve years of marriage had handed him the keys to my kingdom. He had forgotten a critical detail buried deep within the company’s legal foundation: the corporate bylaws gave absolute, controlling voting rights strictly to the founder until those rights were voluntarily, legally transferred via an authenticated signature.
I was the founder. Victor was nothing more than decorative brass on a door that I held the master key to.

For ten days, I played my part to perfection. I let my eyes look puffy. I cried on cue in the executive bathrooms where their hidden whispers couldn't reach me. I let Lila sit in high-level budget meetings, watching her type notes into her smug little leather notebook with the secret smile of a woman who thought she was inheriting a throne. I allowed Victor to patronizingly pat my shoulder in front of senior partners, sighing as he told them, "Mara just needs to rest her mind right now."
Meanwhile, in the shadows, my real team went to work.
