Chapter 3 - Midnight at the Server RoomBy 11:30 PM, the rain had cleared, leaving the city slick and reflective under the artificial glow of streetlights.

In the penthouse suite of the Vance-Sterling corporate tower, the servers hummed with a quiet, digital heartbeat. Millions of lines of proprietary code, customer databases, and financial transactions flowed through the network every second.

Daniel Vance sat in his plush leather chair, a glass of expensive scotch in hand, looking at a digital mockup of his next acquisition. He was preparing to buy out a rival software firm for thirty-five million dollars, a move that would solidify his position as the tech king of the East Coast.

"Daniel," Vanessa’s voice came through his phone speaker, sounding slightly irritated. "Did you tell the billing department at St. Jude’s to charge the suite to the corporate card? The concierge just came in and said there was an authorization error with our primary account."

Daniel frowned, swirling his scotch. "That’s impossible. The corporate card has a three-million-dollar limit. It’s tied directly to our primary operational treasury. I’ll call the bank."

He hung up and dialed the private line of his personal banker, Richard Crox.

"Richard, it's Daniel. I'm having an authorization issue with the corporate line at St. Jude's. Clear it immediately."

"Daniel..." Richard’s voice didn't carry its usual warmth. It sounded strained, almost frightened. "I was actually just about to call you. We’ve received a series of system-generated notifications from the federal clearing house. At 11:00 PM, a revocable trust mandate was executed by the primary beneficiary of the Sterling-Vance Holding Group."

Daniel’s brow furrowed. "The primary beneficiary? That’s me."

"No, Daniel," Richard said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You are the trustee. The primary beneficiary, the sole owner of the master capital account, is Katherine Sterling Vance. Your mother."

Daniel let out a sharp laugh. "My mother? Richard, she’s a retired assembly line worker. She doesn't even know how to use an iPad. What are you talking about?"

"Daniel, the original incorporation documents for Vance Innovative Tech were funded by Sterling Legacy LLC," Richard explained, the sound of keyboard clicks audible over the line. "There is an automatic reversion clause. In the event of documented physical abuse, elder neglect, or familial endangerment of the primary settlor—which is your mother—the trust immediately dissolves, and all corporate assets, intellectual property, and liquid funds revert solely to her control."

"What?" Daniel’s glass of scotch slipped from his hand, shattering against the mahogany desk, the dark amber liquid soaking into his papers. "That’s ridiculous! There’s no abuse! She fell! It was an accident!"

"The bank has just been served with a certified copy of a hospital incident report from Ward 4, along with high-definition security footage showing your wife assaulting Mrs. Katherine Vance while you watched," Richard said. "The legal hold is already in place. As of midnight, your accounts are frozen, Daniel. All of them."
