Chapter 7 - The Boardroom CoupAt 8:55 AM, the executive board members of Vance Innovative Tech sat in the massive, glass-walled conference room on the fortieth floor of the corporate tower.

The atmosphere was electric with tension. Whispers flew across the long mahogany table. Daniel sat at the head, his eyes bloodshot, his suit jacket wrinkled. He had spent the last three hours trying to find a loophole in the incorporation papers, but every path led back to a single, devastating reality: his mother owned the foundation of his world.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

The board members fell silent as Katherine Sterling Vance walked into the room.

She was no longer wearing her old, damp wool coat. She wore a perfectly tailored, charcoal-grey Chanel suit, her silver hair styled in an elegant, commanding sweep. Her posture was regnant, her eyes flashing with a sharp, brilliant intelligence that none of the board members had ever seen before.

Behind her walked Miriam Cole and a team of forensic accountants carrying thick, bound ledgers.

Daniel stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Mom... please. We can talk about this in private. This is a business meeting. You don't belong here."

"Actually, Daniel," Katherine said, her voice cool and carrying effortlessly across the silent room, "I am the only one who belongs here."

She walked to the head of the table. Daniel, feeling the weight of two dozen pairs of eyes on him, slowly backed away, leaving the seat empty.

Katherine sat down. She adjusted her reading glasses and opened the master folder.

"Gentlemen," Katherine said, addressing the board. "For ten years, you have believed that my son was the sole architect of this firm. You believed that his genius was the driving force behind your stock options. But the truth is much simpler. Vance Innovative Tech was built on a series of patents developed by my late husband, Arthur Vance. He died before he could register them. I registered them under a private trust."

She looked at her son, whose face was completely drained of color.

"I let Daniel run this company because I wanted him to have a legacy," Katherine continued, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "But a legacy requires character. And my son has proven that he possesses none. As of 9:00 AM today, under Section 14 of the Sterling Trust Agreement, I am exercising my right of total reclamation. Daniel Vance is officially terminated from his position as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."
