Chapter 1 - The Ash and the ArchiveThe silence that followed the dropping of the robe was heavier than the humid ocean air.

Beside the pristine, cyan waters of the infinity pool, two hundred smartphones remained raised, but the fingers hovering over the record buttons froze. The flashlights illuminated the truth in stark, unforgiving white: Nora’s body was a tapestry of survival. Crimson, silver, and translucent tracks of raised scar tissue crisscrossed her torso, winding around her ribs like barbed wire, climbing up the left side of her neck, and marring the smooth skin of her thigh.

Lila’s breath hitched. The microphone in her hand caught the sharp, ragged sound, broadcasting it through the surround-sound speakers hidden in the manicured hedges. The silver crown nestled in her perfect blonde waves seemed to lose its luster under the glare of the patio floodlights.

"Nora..." Lila whispered, her voice cracking as she took a step back, her silver-heeled sandals clicking sharply against the travertine stone. "What are you doing? This is our birthday. You’re ruining everything."

Nora didn't lower the microphone. Her grip was steady, her knuckles white but unguided by fear.

"I am not ruining the night, Lila," Nora said, her voice clear, carrying across the manicured lawns of the coastal estate. "I am simply correcting the guest list. You wanted everyone to see the monster. Here I am. But let’s talk about how the monster was made."

In the front row of the crowd, their mother, Helen Vance, looked as though she had been struck. Her perfectly symmetric, surgically enhanced face—the literal billboard for Vance Botanicals—was pale beneath her bronzer. She clutched a glass of vintage champagne so tightly the crystal stems groaned. Beside her, Richard Vance stood like a statue, his eyes fixed firmly on the stone floor, unable to meet the gaze of the daughter he had spent a decade hiding in the shadows of the estate's west wing.

Behind the crowd of high-society guests, influencers, and corporate board members, the iron gates of the estate creaked open. Two men in dark navy windbreakers with the words State Fire Marshal: Bureau of Investigation emblazoned in gold across the back stepped onto the lawn.

Nora looked past her trembling sister and smiled directly at the investigators.

"Ten years ago, the public was told that a faulty electrical wire in the guest house caused the blaze," Nora continued into the microphone. "They were told that Richard and Helen Vance heroically saved their beautiful prodigy, Lila, while their tragic, frail daughter Nora was trapped inside by circumstance. But tonight, we have new data for the archive."

The attorney near the fountain, Mr. Harrison, unzipped his leather folder. He didn't look at the parents. He looked only at Nora, his expression grave and resolute. The trap was sprung, and the embers of a ten-year-old lie were about to catch fire once more.
