Chapter 11 - The Secret LaboratoryThe search of the root cellar required the presence of the fire investigation team and a hazardous materials unit.

Nora and Lila stood side by side at the top of the stone stairs as the technicians descended into the darkness, their heavy boots thudding against the damp earth. The air that drifted up from the cellar was cool, smelling of ancient stone and the sharp, distinctive tang of long-evaporated solvents.
After two hours, Inspector Thomas emerged from the gloom, carrying a heavy, rusted steel safe. He set it down on the concrete floor of the garage, using a hydraulic cutter to shear through the old lock.
Inside the safe lay three glass vials filled with a dense, shimmering amber liquid, perfectly preserved by the stable temperature of the underground chamber. Beside the vials was a digital hard drive wrapped in anti-static plastic.
"This is it," Nora whispered, her hand trembling as she reached out to touch the glass. "The unadulterated Evelyn-Core compound."

"The forensics team verified the drive's contents, Dr. Sterling—sorry, Miss Vance," Inspector Thomas corrected himself with a respectful nod. "It contains the complete, unredacted clinical data from 2015. This data proves that the formula is ninety-eight percent effective at eliminating scar tissue and accelerating cellular reconstruction without the need for invasive skin grafts."
Nora looked at the amber liquid, then at the reflection of her shorn, scarred profile in the polished metal of the safe. The tools for her own healing, and the healing of millions of others like her, had been sitting right beneath her feet for a decade, hidden by the greed of the people who were supposed to love her.
