Chapter 2 - The Document in the DarkTo understand the execution of the Vance family dynamic, one had to understand the nature of Vance Botanicals. Founded not by Helen or Richard, but by Grandmother Evelyn, the multi-million-dollar skincare empire was built on a single, closely guarded proprietary patent: a rare cellular-regeneration compound extracted from deep-sea flora.

That morning, before the caterers arrived, Lila had slipped a document under Nora’s breakfast plate. Nora remembered the smug look on her twin's face. “Sign it, Nora. Mother says it’s just a formality for the trust insurance before we turn eighteen. Don’t make a scene.”

But Nora had spent ten years reading in the dark. While Lila was being flown to Paris for photoshoots, Nora was sitting in the sterile corridors of plastic surgery clinics, reading the fine print of medical releases, insurance claims, and legal briefs. She had kept the document.

"Mr. Harrison," Nora called out, her voice cutting through the rising murmurs of the two hundred guests. "Would you care to read the document my sister tried to force me to sign at seven o'clock this morning?"

Mr. Harrison stepped forward, his polished shoes loud against the stone. He adjusted his glasses and pulled a document bearing the distinct gold embossed seal of the Evelyn Vance Estate.

"This document," Harrison announced, his voice carrying the weight of thirty years of legal authority, "is a global waiver of rights and a declaration of mental incompetence regarding Nora Vance. Had she signed it, she would have legally transferred her entire fifty percent voting share in Vance Botanicals to her sister, Lila Vance, effective at midnight tonight—the exact hour of their eighteenth birthday."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. The influencers, realizing this was a corporate coup unfolding live, immediately began turning their cameras from Nora’s scars to Helen and Richard’s pale faces.

"Why would they need a waiver?" Nora asked rhetorically, looking down at Lila, who was now on her knees, her silver bikini glittering mockingly against the cold stone. "Because according to Grandmother Evelyn’s true will, which was locked in a safety deposit box until yesterday, the company doesn't belong to our parents. It was left to the twin who possessed the true genetic sequence of the core formula. And our parents knew exactly which twin that was."

Helen broke out of her trance. She dropped her champagne glass; it shattered against the pavement, splashing amber liquid over her designer dress. "Nora! Stop this madness! You don't know what you're talking about! We protected you! We kept you safe from the media!"

"No, Mother," Nora said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "You kept me safe from the auditors."
