Chapter 4 - The Fire Investigators' VerdictInspector Thomas walked toward the pool deck, pulling a yellowed, plastic-sealed document from his jacket pocket. He took the second microphone from the presentation stand.
"My department received an anonymous tip three weeks ago containing new digital forensic evidence," Inspector Thomas announced to the crowd. "We reopened the file on the 2016 Vance Estate fire. For ten years, the official record stated that the cause was undetermined due to structural destruction. However, we now have the original, unedited emergency dispatch audio and the chemical analysis logs from the soil samples taken that night."
Helen Vance looked as if she might faint. She reached for the back of a patio chair to steady herself.
"The soil samples," Inspector Thomas continued, "contained high concentrations of Toluene and synthetic polymer bases—compounds strictly restricted from residential use and identical to the chemical waste profiles of Vance Botanicals' early manufacturing plants. Furthermore, we have evidence that the fire suppression system in the pool house had been deliberately drained of water two days prior to lower the property’s insurance risk profile during a financial audit."
The crowd erupted into furious whispers.
The Crime: Arson for insurance fraud and destruction of illegal chemical testing logs.
The Victims: Two eight-year-old children left in the vicinity of a hazardous materials fire.
The Cover-Up: Using the physical damage of one twin to justify her complete removal from public life, while using the other as the pristine face of a fraudulent recovery narrative.

"We aren't just here to watch a family drama, ladies and gentlemen," Inspector Thomas said, looking at the security guards who were now sealing the exits of the estate. "We are here because a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Richard and Helen Vance for arson, insurance fraud, and child endangerment."
Nora stood perfectly still, the wind rustling the hem of her navy swimsuit. She looked down at Lila. "You knew, didn't you? You found the files in Mother's office last year. That's why you started treating me like an enemy instead of a sister. You realized that if I ever woke up to my rights, your entire world would disappear."
