Part 3: The Black Folder

Evelyn walked with a slow, deliberate pace toward her daughter, her face a mask of absolute stone. She gently pulled Lucy into her arms, checking her pulse and assessing the bruising on her cheek. The pediatric nurse was trembling, and Dr. Hall had frozen in place, visibly terrified of the political fallout involving a Mercer family member.

Kelly crossed her arms, entirely unbothered. "Oh, don't look at me like that, Evelyn. The girl was throwing a tantrum. Someone needs to teach her manners since you clearly can't."

Evelyn didn't answer her. Instead, she turned to her personal assistant, who had just stepped off the executive elevator carrying a sleek, matte-black leather folder.

Evelyn took the folder, opened it, and strode directly into the glass-walled office of the hospital president, who had rushed out into the hallway upon hearing the commotion. She slid a single, certified document across his desk, her finger tapping a specific clause.

"Read paragraph seven aloud," Evelyn commanded.

The hospital president adjusted his glasses, his eyes scanning the page. Within seconds, the color completely drained from his face. His hands began to shake as he looked from the legal document up to Evelyn, then out toward Kelly. He instantly recognized the signature at the bottom—the signature of the ultimate authority of the entire health system.

He immediately reached for the emergency microphone on his desk, which connected directly to the VIP floor's overhead audio system.

Realizing the tides were turning, Kelly lunged toward the desk to grab the microphone. "Don't touch that!"

But before her fingers could make contact, two burly hospital security officers stepped firmly into her path, blocking her completely. Kelly stopped so suddenly that the heel of her designer shoe scraped sharply across the polished marble floor.

"This is nothing but a ridiculous family misunderstanding!" Kelly yelled, her voice dripping with desperation. "My niece was throwing a hysterical fit. Evelyn simply refuses to discipline her child!"
