Evelyn turned another page in the black folder, exposing a meticulous log of corporate complaints that had been buried by administrators for months out of fear of the Mercer name.

"That room was occupied by a dying veteran, Kelly," Evelyn said, her voice dropping an octave. "And today, you laid your hands on my daughter."
For a brief fraction of a second, Kelly’s absolute confidence cracked. She looked around the hallway, but not a single doctor, nurse, or bystander looked at her with anything less than utter revulsion. Nobody was going to defend her.
Sensing her elite world shrinking, Kelly stepped closer to Evelyn, narrowing her eyes to a malicious slit. "You think a few legal documents and an ownership percentage make you powerful in this town? You're nothing."
Evelyn remained completely still, refusing to grant her a reaction.
Kelly lowered her voice to a venomous whisper. "My brother Daniel will choose me. He always does. When he finds out you staged this little circus to humiliate his family, he will walk away from you and take everything."
That single sentence revealed the structural rot that had allowed Kelly to thrive for so long. For over a decade, she had relied on her brother to clean up her wreckage.
When she insulted a hospital worker, Daniel sent flowers and apologized privately.
When she threatened an administrative clerk, Daniel arranged a quiet corporate transfer.
