Part 4: The Illusions of Power

The hospital president ignored Kelly entirely. He pressed the broadcast button, his voice echoing clearly and loudly across the entire VIP executive floor.
"Attention. By order of the controlling owner of Mercer Meridian Health Holdings, all non-emergency executive privileges assigned to the Kelly Mercer household are suspended immediately, pending an internal legal review."
The overhead speakers clicked off, leaving a ringing silence in the corridor. Kelly stared at the president, her mouth opening and closing in disbelief.
"Controlling owner?" Kelly whispered, a cold spike of panic finally piercing her arrogance. "What are you talking about? My family practically built this hospital!"
Evelyn stepped out of the office, turning to face her sister-in-law. "That paper is fake," Kelly snarled, pointing a trembling finger at the black folder. "It has to be fake!"
The chief legal officer, who had followed Evelyn down from the executive suite, opened his tablet and turned the screen toward Kelly. "The document was officially certified and filed at 8:00 a.m. this morning, Ms. Mercer. It is entirely binding."
Desperate, Kelly turned to the nurse manager standing behind the main desk. "Tell them who I am! Tell them right now!"
The nurse manager swallowed hard, looking down at the floor. "I know who you told us you were, Ms. Mercer."
"What is that supposed to mean?!" Kelly shrieked.
"It means," the chief legal officer explained with a chilling lack of emotion, "that your elite VIP privileges were never funded by a personal donation from your branch of the family."

Kelly’s entire face stiffened. "My family has supported the financial development of this medical wing for years!"
"No, Kelly," Evelyn said, her voice remaining deadly quiet. "I supported it."
