Chapter 1 – The Recording That Changed Everything

The ballroom doors burst open just as the ambulance crew rushed inside.

Two paramedics hurried toward Sophie.

"Eight-year-old female," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady. "Blunt-force trauma to the head."

One of them immediately began wrapping a pressure bandage around her wound.

The other looked at Preston.

"Did you strike the child?"

Before he could answer, my father stepped forward.

"It was an unfortunate accident."

"No," I interrupted.

"It was assault."

Preston laughed.

"Good luck proving that."

I looked past him.

Toward the hotel manager who had just entered with two uniformed security officers.

His expression was unusually serious.

"Mrs. Carter?"

"Yes."

"I'm Daniel Morrison, general manager of the Whitmore Hotel."

He looked directly at Preston.

"Our security office notified me that there was a violent incident in the Grand Ballroom."

Preston forced a smile.

"Family misunderstanding."

Daniel didn't smile back.

"I'm afraid our cameras recorded something quite different."

Silence.

Every guest slowly turned toward the ballroom entrance.

One security officer spoke into his radio.

"Lock down all exits."

Nobody leaves.

Preston's confidence flickered.

"What?"

"The footage has already been secured."

His bride grabbed his arm.

"Preston..."

He pulled away.

"It's fine."

"They can't prove anything."

Daniel calmly answered.

"Our surveillance system records from twelve different angles."

"And none of them blink."
