Chapter 2 – Lies Unravel

The hotel security room was filled within minutes.

Police detectives.

Hotel management.

Several attorneys who had attended the wedding.

My parents insisted on coming.

"So everyone can see Evelyn's lies," my mother declared.

The lead detective inserted the recording.

The screen came alive.

Camera One.

Guests laughing.

Children dancing.

Sophie sitting quietly beside me.

Camera Three.

Preston walked behind our table.

He looked over both shoulders.

Reached into his own tuxedo pocket.

Removed his titanium phone.

Slipped it carefully into Sophie's little denim jacket.

Then walked away.

No one spoke.

The detective rewound it.

Played it again.

Slower.

Every movement became undeniable.

My mother whispered,

"No..."

My father stared at the monitor without blinking.

Then came Camera Seven.

The microphone announcement.

The fake search.

Preston dramatically "discovering" the phone.

The guests gasped exactly as they had earlier.

Only now they understood why.

Then Camera Eleven.

The confrontation.

My tiny daughter crying.

Me stepping between them.

Preston grabbing the heavy oak menu board.

Swinging with both hands.

The impact echoed even through the recording.

Sophie's small body collapsing.

The detective paused the video.

He turned toward Preston.

"Would you like to explain this?"

May you like

For the first time...

Preston had no words.
