Chapter 6 – The Last Wedding Gift

Nearly a year later, I returned to the Whitmore Hotel.

Not for another wedding.

For a children's charity gala benefiting young victims of abuse.

The same ballroom looked completely different.

The blood was gone.

The fear was gone.

Only memories remained.

Daniel Morrison greeted us at the entrance.

"We saved something for you."

He handed Sophie a beautifully framed photograph.

It wasn't from the wedding ceremony.

It was captured by one of the security cameras moments before everything changed.

In the picture, I was standing in front of my daughter with my arms spread wide, shielding her from Preston.

Sophie studied the image for a long time.

"Mommy..."

"You look like a superhero."

I smiled.

"No, sweetheart."

"I looked like what every parent should become when their child is in danger."

She squeezed my hand as we walked into the ballroom together.

Behind us, the crystal chandeliers sparkled exactly as they had on that terrible night.

But they reflected a different family now.

Not one built on lies, favoritism, and silence.

A family of two.

A mother and a daughter who had learned that love is not measured by shared blood, but by the courage to protect one another.

Preston lost his freedom.

My parents lost the son they spent decades refusing to correct.

But Sophie gained something far more valuable.

She learned that the truth may be delayed, but it does not disappear.

And sometimes, all it takes to bring down a lifetime of lies...

...is one security camera that never looked away.
