Chapter 3 – The Golden Son Falls

Police officers approached Preston.
His bride stumbled backward.
"You told me she stole it."
"I..."
"You said your niece embarrassed us."
"I can explain."
She shook her head.
"No."
"You manipulated all of us."
The ballroom that had celebrated his wedding only an hour earlier had transformed into a courtroom.
Guests pulled out their phones.
Some quietly deleted congratulatory posts.
Others began uploading videos of the arrest.
My father finally spoke.
"Officer..."
"My son has never—"
The detective interrupted.
"Your son committed assault against a minor in front of more than two hundred witnesses."
"There is also clear evidence that he fabricated a theft."
My mother burst into tears.
"He made a mistake."
The detective answered calmly.
"No."
"He made several deliberate decisions."
Handcuffs clicked shut around Preston's wrists.
The sound echoed through the silent ballroom.
