Chapter 5 – Choosing My Daughter

Months later, the criminal trial ended.
The jury deliberated less than three hours.
Guilty.
On every count.
Assault of a child.
Filing a false police report.
Evidence tampering.
My parents tried calling me every day afterward.
I never answered.
Instead, I focused on Sophie.
We started therapy together.
She slowly returned to school.
One afternoon she asked quietly,
"Mommy..."
"Was it my fault?"
I knelt beside her.
"No."
"It was never your fault."
"Sometimes grown-ups make terrible choices."
"But those choices belong to them."
She wrapped her little arms around my neck.
May you like
"I believe you."
That hug healed something inside me that revenge never could.
