Chapter 1 - The Raw Edge of MorningThe bathroom mirror did not lie, but it did not comfort either.

Under the harsh, buzzing fluorescent light of dawn, Claire stared at the jagged, uneven ruins of her hair. Lorraine’s shears had chewed close to the scalp on the left side, leaving a raw, exposed patch of skin that throbbed with a dull, persistent heat. On the right, desperate tufts clung together like weeds in a drought.

She picked up the small, heavy scissors she used for trimming loose threads and began to work. Her fingers were remarkably steady. With methodical, rhythmic snips, she leveled the remaining strands, shearing them down to a uniform, fierce buzz cut. It was not the hairstyle of a candidate seeking approval; it was the war paint of a woman preparing for battle.

She swept the fallen dark strands into a small plastic evidence bag, sealing it with a sharp click.

Beside her sink lay the white pantsuit she had bought three months ago for this exact day. She slipped into it. The fabric was pristine, a stark contrast to the dark, angry bruises blooming across her wrists where Daniel had pinned her to the carpet. She concealed them beneath the crisp cuffs of her jacket, fastening the silver cufflinks her father had given her when she passed her qualifying exams.

Before leaving, she walked back into the bedroom. Daniel lay sprawled across the mattress, snoring softly. On the nightstand, an empty bottle of champagne stood next to a glass smeared with Lorraine’s lipstick. They had celebrated her destruction before it had even been finalized.

Claire reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and checked the secure server. The file was there: a 45-minute audio-video recording from the baby monitor, crystal clear, capturing every grunt of Daniel's exertion, every snarl of Lorraine's malice, and the unmistakable sound of steel blades cutting through hair.

"Sleep well," Claire whispered. "It's the last peaceful rest you'll have."
