Chapter 4 - The Presentation Begins"Members of the committee, distinguished guests," Claire began, her voice carrying effortlessly to the back of the hall. "The title of my dissertation is Veritas: Real-Time Algorithmic Detection of Data Manipulation in Distributed Educational Networks."

She clicked her remote, and the massive screen behind her came alive with complex architectural diagrams.
"In modern educational systems, data integrity is paramount. From standardized testing to patent applications, the temptation to alter digital records for financial or reputational gain has grown exponentially. Current security measures are reactive; they tell you when a breach has occurred. Veritas is proactive. It detects the behavioral patterns of data manipulation as they happen."
In the third row, Daniel leaned back, a subtle, cruel smile returning to his face. He reached into his pocket and tapped a button on his phone.
Claire continued, explaining the core mathematics of her detection engine. But as she spoke, her eyes flicked to the small diagnostic monitor on her podium. A red warning light was flashing.
Unauthorized external access detected.
The system was registering a massive download request hitting the university’s secure staging server—the exact server where her patent-pending source code was stored. The IP address tracing back to the request was routed through a local residential network, but the MAC address of the machine was distinct.
It was Daniel’s personal laptop, currently sitting in the trunk of his car, running a scheduled automated script he had set up to copy her entire research catalog and upload it to a dummy corporation he had registered three weeks ago.

Claire didn't falter. She smoothly transitioned to her next slide.
"To demonstrate the efficacy of Veritas," Claire said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, silky register, "we do not need to rely on hypothetical scenarios. We have a live test case happening right now."
