Chapter 4 - The Price of ProtectionThe news of Mrs. Caruso’s sudden, disgraced termination rippled through the Valentino estate like a shockwave. By nightfall, the power dynamic of the mansion had entirely inverted. The maids who had once ignored Arya now looked at her with a mixture of fear and profound reverence.

The next morning, Arya found a brand-new box of heavy-duty nitrile gloves, a jar of expensive medical skin salve, and a clean white envelope waiting on her locker bench. Inside the envelope was a receipt from the Philadelphia oncology clinic, stamped: PAID IN FULL — ACCOUNT BALANCE MATCHED TO VALENTINO HOLDINGS.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text from her mother’s primary care doctor, confirming that the high-risk treatments would resume immediately. Arya sat down on the bench, tears of absolute relief spilling over her cheeks. She was free of the crushing debt, but she wasn't foolish enough to believe this was a act of pure charity.

In the mafia world, every gift carried a ledger.

"You’re late for your new assignment," a deep voice boomed from the locker room doorway.

Arya jumped, quickly wiping her eyes. It was Marco, Dante’s personal security chief. He stood with his arms crossed, a thick leather binder tucked under his arm.

"My new assignment?" Arya asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Am I not on the floor rotation anymore?"

"Mr. Valentino has moved you to the private wing," Marco replied, his face an unreadable mask. "You are no longer a general cleaner, Miss Mitchell. You are now his personal office clerk. You will handle his correspondence, his filing, and his private quarters. Come with me."

As she followed Marco up the grand staircase—the very marble floors she had scrubbed with her blood just twenty-four hours prior—she felt the eyes of the remaining staff burning into her spine. She was being lifted out of the mud, but she was being placed directly into the lion’s den.
